Coffee machines

Coffee machines entered households much earlier than many might think — their history dates back to the late 19th century. However, it wasn’t until the mid-20th century that they began to be widely used at home. Between 1820 and 1840, the first mechanical coffee brewing devices started to appear in Europe. In 1884, Angelo Moriondo in Italy patented the first prototype of an espresso machine, which used steam pressure. In 1901, Luigi Bezzera improved the espresso machine, making it more suitable for workplaces and cafés. However, these were still commercial machines — too large and complex for home use.

Home coffee machines began to emerge around 1960, when the first appliances specifically designed for domestic consumers were introduced. This marked a turning point in the history of coffee machine technology. Around the same time, drip coffee maker prototypes appeared on the market, gaining particular popularity in the United States. In 1972, Mr. Coffee launched the first widely available automatic coffee maker for home use, which became a bestseller.

Espresso machines for home use only started to gain broader popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. As technology advanced, the machines became more compact, affordable, and user-friendly. Later, between 2000 and 2010, capsule coffee machines (such as Nespresso and Dolce Gusto) quickly grew in popularity.

The mass coffee culture truly expanded from the 2000s, when a variety of modern and convenient coffee machine models became available, along with a wide range of coffee types and flavors. Today, coffee machines are an integral part of modern kitchen design and a key element of contemporary coffee culture.
